Aspros Potamos - early Cretan Traditional Houses - Makrigialos
OUR REVIEW Aspros Potamos is in a beautiful valley just in from Makrigialos
and the sea, hidden in a fold of the south coast. This valley is lovingly protected by the owner of the
original Aspros Potamos houses - you can stay in one and experience Crete in an almost primitive way long forgotten in most
areas of the island. Ultimate simplicity in facilities preserves the calm,
spiritual, spirited feel of the place. If having time to your "true self" is what you seek, and
throwing off the chains of an ever-modernized world boasting of more and more "facilities",
seems pleasing, and inspiring - this is truly one of a kind. Lighting is principally by oil lamp. The
tiny houses are furnished with wooden chairs and tables, linen and lace hangs cover the windows, a fireplace with
round ceramic chimney (for November to March use). Some rooms are built into the rocks!
OK - so you are away, steeped in nature and historic dwellings, but the modern pace, the spoils of our age are just a ten minute walk away. Head along the path beside the river (1 km, also driveable) and suddenly at the end, you are in Makrigialos with tavernas, cafes, bars and its most satisfying beach. The harbour awaits when a cafe where you can watch a fishing boat come and go is the best reward - or - eating fresh fish at at taverna seems most acceptable. Aspros

We had a great time in Crete - the area we stayed in was exactly what we were looking for and the little rustic villas perfect and very beautiful in their simplicity. If we go to Crete again we would definitely stay there a second time. It was in fact better than I expected - so good in fact we are thinking of buying some land in the area!
Thanks again for your excellent service - I will be recommending you to all our friends! Julia Lowery We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Crete. The Aspros Potamos house was great - and luckily for us they were nearly full and so we were upgraded to a larger house which was beautiful. Thank you for your help in booking it.Natalie Vine We had a fantastic holiday in Crete. The houses of Aspros Potamos were exactly what we were looking for. We were afraid it would be Disney world, but it was very authentic. We recommended the place to many of our friends who became all very interested in visiting. Also, it was great to meet charming Mirto, who was always eager to recommend us very special places see. We explored as much of the East part of the island as possible. For a future visit we would be interested in the West part. On the other hand we would love to go back to stay in Aspros.. It was certainly not the last time we visited Crete and will check out your offers on the net. thanks for the reservation you made, Alexander Franz The houses at Aspros Potamos were a great place to walk and relax. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. We liked the east of the island and if you ignored the resort end of Makrigialos the tavernas were a great place to spend and evening. Peter Copleston Aspros Potamos was everything and more we had hoped for. Our hostess (I cant remember her name) was most accommodating. It is really a beautiful place and cant wait until we return again. Thanks for all your help. Hayley Newman Aspros Potamos was everything I imagined and more. Myrto, Mannos and Aleka are wonderful host and became good friends by the end of my stay. I will go back there again someday. Ditta Hussein Both [Villa Kerasia] and Aspros Potamos were WONDERFUL! We had been working with a travel agent for our trip to Greece and, frankly, we liked these two better than any of the other places we stayed. Part of it was probably that they were out of the way, not in big towns, and really, that is more our style. Both hosts were delightfully friendly, both places were clean and well-kept, breakfast at Kerasia was the best in Greece, and the tranquility at Aspros Potamos was sublime. Margaret Hayes Spellman We had a wonderful trip! Thank you for your help with our reservations. You were efficient and organized with all the information. The directions you sent were particularly helpful. Aspros Potamos was an entirely different experience and we were so pleased that we had the opportunity to stay there and meet Myrto and her mother Aliki. Again, thank you for everything.
