OUR REVIEW
Matala -
the place of spectacular sunsets, a bustling and popular seaside
village which springs to life for its visitors. The place where the caves became a paradise for the "hippies" in the 70's. The hippies
are missing, but Matala magic still flows and the village has been spruced up
in part.
Hotel Calypso is built into a hillside, surrounded by trees and
green gardens.
It is a small family hotel of 20 rooms. Each has private bathroom, air
conditioning, small fridge, telephone, safe, balcony with
garden/hill view (the sea is not visible from the hotel itself),
double glazed windows. Swimming can be enjoyed at the hotel's
large swimming pool or Matala's nearby beach (5 minute walk). There is space for children
to play outside and a playground. There is also parking and a
taverna/cafe with terrace above the gardens.
The deep sandy beach and the rest of Matala which you can enjoy as you please is
a five minute stroll from the hotel.
The wonderful sandy beach of Kommos,
which seems to extend forever to the west, and its adjoining
substantial archaeological remains, are a short drive.
Not far from Matala is the Minoan Palace of
Phaestos, the summer palace of Agia Triada, the antiquities of Gortys and many monasteries. You can enjoy
swimming from three different nearby beaches. Matala has no big resort hotels and preserves a local and friendly
atmosphere.
Ten minutes away, in the village of Pitsidia,
horse-back riding is available.
