Keramos Hotel- Zaros
OUR REVIEW A wonderful, cozy, traditional family hotel. Warm hospitality and the best homemade, real Cretan, breakfast in Crete. Like the hotel itself, all studios, are decorated in a pleasingly old-fashioned, traditional style with iron or wooden beds. The studios are simple, yet spacious and airy, include a small kitchenette (except for 4 new rooms on the top floor) and a modern bathroom with shower. All studios have air conditioning, central heating and balconies. Some face the street & village and some face the countryside and mountains. Staying at Keramos offers a real cretan village
experience: because of its location in the heart of the Zaros mountain village and because of the special
hospitality by lady-owner Katerina and her children. Her renowned breakfast includes: fresh goat's milk, fresh
eggs, homemade cake and pastries, little cretan cheese or spinach pies, honey, coffee or tea made from local mountain
herbs. All made from the family's produce, with Katerina's cooking talent. From Keramos, you can walk around the village,
have fresh trout at nearby Votomos lake, walk the Zaros gorge and Rouvas forest in the area or visit the
Vrondisi Monastery. Many other small
villages near Zaros are worth exploring - the countryside is beautiful! Long sandy beaches (Kalamaki, Matala)
can be found at a 40 minute drive. We recommend that you rent a car, other means of transport are limited and/or infrequent.
We had a brilliant time in the Keramos Hotel in Zaros in July.
The owner, Katerina bakes countless pastries for breakfast then insists on
feeding you extra meals. We felt like family members! Thanks for
his help.
Jeanine Waller We LOVED the Keramos Hotel. Katarina was great. We became friends and we have sent her a photo be took of her and us at the hotel. We loved Crete. I hope we can return soon. Bill Lauer Our holiday during the last week of October 2006 was brilliant. This was our first visit to Crete although we have visited many other greek islands and the Greek mainland. As my husband and I have to drive everyday for work we decided use just public transport for out week on Crete. This was not a problem eventhough we were in the hills. We stayed overnight in Iraklion after arriving 10.30pm. Next day, after sipping coffee with the locals for a couple of hours we caught the bus to our accommodation. We were greeted enthusiastically by Katerina who gave us mountain tea and biscuits before showing us all her rooms and asking us to choose which room we preferred. What a choice. We were overwelmed by her hospitality and the room was just what we had hoped. Simple, solid furniture, white sheets, deep red blankets and rugs, crisp white walls and a balcony looking over the allotments to the hills. The bathroom was a decent size and even with a plug in the sink!! Although Katerina speaks no english, we have a little greek and agreed that we would eat in that night. At 7pm we went down for dinner not knowing what we were eat or how many other people would be joining us. The food just kept coming, leaving us to guess what exactly each dish was which was all good fun. Wine was supplied in the same vain. We stumbled to bed later very contented. Breakfast the next morning was again plentiful with mountain tea "on tap". Breakfast was good and filling although more geared I think to the german tourist as it consisited of lots of cake and pastry. But it set us up well for the day with Katerina putting leftovers in a bag for us for a picnic lunch in the hills later. Katerina and her family went out of there way to help us in any way they could. Katerina even bought me a birthday present when she found out that my birthday coincided with ohi! day [national holiday, 28 October]. When it was time to leave on the Sunday we settled our bill for the accommodation. When we asked for the bill for the food we had been given we were only asked for a contribution, "... whatever you think it is worth..." said Katerina's daughter. We were astonished. The service and food we were given was priceless. The food from their land and given so generously was humbling. We were truly sad to get on the bus to leave and meet our flight back into " the real world " I would certainly go back to this accommodation and recomend it to anyone looking for traditional hospitality. Again, sorry for the delay in replying to your email and hope this has been helpful to you. Kind regards, Jenny Delliston Please respond with how wonderful the food was at Keramos and that it was very likely the high point of our trip. Allan Norton KERAMOS (ZAROS) : Room : in a third floor without elevator and our baggage was very heavy. Other items : Not very clean and no hot water in the morning. Breakfast "homemade" : a nonsense to try to eat at 8.00 A.M.; but no yougurth and no fruit juice. [yogurt or eggs can be requested] Gabriel Hakel We had a very enjoyable visit. The Hotel Keramos was better than expected. The room was nice and the owners were very friendly and kind. Their hospitality made the stay quite special. Thank you, David Ross The staff at the Keramos were charming and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were as you showed and coffee, tea and cakes were produced nearly every time we entered the hotel. Copyright CreteTravel.com - protected You probably know that Catherina broke her leg shortly before our arrival and she held court from the depths of a big double bed, with more coffe and cakes. Despite her accident her family and staff ran the place like clockwork. We loved the area and the walks and flora were magnificent. We visited the Spili plateau, for the orchids, and through a meeting with two local Brits, spent May 1st with local Cretans at a rather alcoholic barbecue. You probably heard that we contrived to take our room key away with us. Well it was only about 8 inches long and weighed about 3/4 kilo. Security at Iraklion Airport were determined that it was a gun!!. Anyway the hotel should now have it back. All in all a superb holiday for which we thankyou. I am sure we will be in touch again for another visit to Crete or elsewhere in Greece. Alan Taylor All your arrangements worked beautifully and we had a wonderful time. We have completely fallen in love with Crete, and are already talking about going back in the spring, when the flowers will be out and perhaps not quite so hot - 33-35 degrees C most days (even as high as 38oC) is a bit of a shock when you come from cloudy old England. Feels very cold having come home! Keramos (Zaros) was again clean and comfortable. The only minus point was the breakfast - very nice, but such a waste of food. None of us are used to large breakfasts and 12-15 different sweet pies & roles, plus cheese pie every morning was just too much - a lot of it got fed to the fish in the lake! The other problem for me was that the only cup of decaffeinated coffee I got was at Heraklion airport as I left. Next year I'll bring my own! (Worth mentioning to other tourists.) Altogether - a fantastic holiday - wonderful hospitality, wonderful country and so much to see - we only saw the eastern half! We're coming again to do the western end - hopefully next spring. Many thanks, for all your help in planning this and I'll be in touch ! ! ! Angela Dudley I think you could have better pictures from the hotel. I think you would sell more then, and Katherinas breakfast is much more than cheese pies. In fact she gets up at 4 in the morning to start baking. Yes, I've had a wonderful time and would recommend it. Mona Bohle About these guest experiences RATES 2010 (rates include our Superb, All-questions-answered Personal service)
