Monastiriako Traditional Suites - Giannoudi (Rethymno)
OUR REVIEW Hidden in the hills, concealed between ruins of ancient buildings, some of which form the wonderfully restored part of Monastiriako, classified as of architectural and historic conservation merit. As its name hints, it is built on the grounds of a 15th century monastery and the church of these origins sits next to it. "Studio-houses" are a good way of describing these large suites (approx. 80 sq.m. each). Ornamented by a circular pool, as you peer out of the solid-stone columns of your atmospheric quarters and survey the sweep of forested green hills. An old olive press still sits in the courtyard, cleverly acting as an impromptu dining area. There are terraces, courtyards and patios for those quiet moments.
Each suite - individually decorated - has arches or other features of local hewn stone, white stone floors, bathroom, kitchenette (no extractor fans - for preservation of ancient walls), traditional furnishings and items. The larger suites are on two levels. Modern comforts are not forgotten - air conditioning, satellite TV and DVD players are included. The small shared swimming pool has hydro jets.
Monastiriako is on the edge of a small village - Giannoudi, with its share of ancient ruined buildings and a few well-restored ones. There is the convenient pleasure of the retreat-like taverna with swimming pool; serves food that is fresh, fine and wholesome.
Three kilometres from the beach stretching east of Rethymno and but 15 minutes from the walls and town of its ancient harbour, barely an hour from Chania - this is a convenient, characterful and comfortable base from which to explore. Take trips to the White Mountains and Sfakia, the gorge at Prassies, the wonderful route through old villages on the way to Zaros (also a scenic way of reaching Agia Gallini on the south coast). The splendid Arkadi monastery is 30 minutes by car. Tennis court at 1 kilometre.

RATES 2009 (rates include our Superb, All-questions-answered Personal service)
Rates are per
suite (2 people), per night and include air conditioning and all taxes. "Lida"
(smaller) is ideal for 2 people (3 people max). NOTE: The "Danai" suite is perhaps the most appealing suite, with a large private balcony. However, it has a staircase (up to the bedroom) with no railing and the only bathroom is downstairs and tiny. So it is not suitable for elderly guests or small children.
