Villa Creta Estate, hillside villas with pools in Malades

When you seek an instant home as in "home away from home" one of the two Villa Creta Estate houses will work supremely well, comfortably and inspiringly.

Inland and up on the hillside in an area with fascinating villages, astounding views, dramatic rock outcrops, and much growing - naturally and planted in the valley. 20 minutes from the centre of Heraklion, Knossos, near the rock climbing and horse trail centres of Profitis Elias. A real "valley-of-Crete" location and atmosphere. Enjoy the views of near-distance villages on the hillsides, the famous Zeus (Yiouhtas) mountain and more. Around you are vineyards, olive trees, fruit trees, wild bushes, aromatic trees and herbs.

Each of the two villas is completely private (you cannot even see one from the other) and designed with a spacious single level layout.

One villa sleeps up to 8 people the other up to 5, in comfort with several bathrooms and quality finish.
Each villa has a private swimming pool, terraces with superb views and barbecue areas. Complete kitchens invite preparation of culinary delights. Living areas are open and spacious, light, bright and airy.
A dining area with pool, below the villas, offers choices of prepared traditional Greek food - home-made meals and cakes cooked by Stella. Meals can also be served at your villa.

For winter there is a huge central wood burning wrought iron stove and air conditioners in the bedrooms can be set to their heating mode. For the summer air conditioners can be used to cool the villa, however, very little extra cooling is ever needed due to its design, location and thermal properties.

You can take out the horses and ride with the Villa Creta family owners' horses. Enjoy (especially children!) the miniature mountain train, the wild boars, hens, and farm animals. Play tennis on the estate's tennis court. Prepare your own breakfast of fresh eggs and home made cheese from the surrounding fifty acre estate, which your house sits in the middle of. There is unbounded hospitality, helpfulness and friendliness.

VILLA STELLA (up to 8 people)
Indoors: Traditionally furnished. The dining area and lounge has a large capacity wood burning stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with electric stove, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, coffee maker, toaster and all utensils and cutlery. There are three air conditioned bedrooms in the main area. A bedroom with a double bed and bathroom en-suite (with an open gallery above, with a single bed); a bedroom with one single bed and another bedroom with two single beds (this has an open gallery above, with two single beds). Second bathroom.

Outdoors: Large terraces with vines and fruit trees, views to the mountain of Zeus, the valley and the sea. The swimming pool has aromatic trees and herbs as a surrounding and has sitting areas ideal for al fresco dining or just relaxing.

VILLA DESPINA (up to 5 people)
Indoors: Sits higher up on the hill and the design is similar to villa Stella, with a majestic sweep of mountain views which can be enjoyed through many floor-to-ceiling windows or sitting on the balcony. The villa has a dinning area and lounge with a large wood burning stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas cooker and electric stove, dishwasher, fridge and freezer coffee maker, toaster and all kitchen utensils. There are three air conditioned bedrooms, one with a double bed and en-suite bathroom, one with a single bed and one with two single beds. Second separate bathroom.

Outdoors: The swimming pool is located between olive trees, gardens and an open-sided, shaded sitting area ideal for al fresco meals and reading. The balcony runs the length of the front of the villa, from which the views and herb-scented mountain can be enjoyed, endlessly.

Beach on south coast: Matala - 82 km.
We recommend that you rent a car, other means of transport are limited and/or infrequent (you cannot reach Villa Creta by public transport).

I having nothing but praise for the villas we stayed in, and Alexandros and his family. They were the perfect hosts: neither too intrusive, nor to hands-off. When we wished for their advice, for example, when choosing an off-the-beaten track beach to visit they came up trumps. They were temporarily dismayed when we insisted, despite their advice to contrary, on driving half the length of the island (almost) to walk the Samaria gorge and return in one day.

But were pleasantly surprised when we arrived back still mobile. I would have no hesitation in recommending them, and their properties, to other possible visitors.
