Yakinthos Hotel - Axos (near Anogia)
OUR REVIEW Perched above the interesting village of Axos, on the cascading side of Psiloritis mountain near Anogia, inland and west of Heraklion (43 km) - but ages away in atmosphere. Many archaeological sites and caves, much history about which the owners are happy to guide and inform you. There are local Kafeneia, tavernas and more in the village. Fine natural, local ingredients are provided for your breakfast, which you can enjoy at your leisure in the studios and apartments. The owners will sample Raki with you, and happily introduce you to all manner of local interests. Their son's talent with the mandolin is often expressed in impromptu musical evenings, to the delight of guests (the photos are family and guest moments).
We would save our best compliments for the Yakinthos hotel. We were welcomed into the family, fed very well and given gifts of wine and olives to take home with us. They seem to have a very good business going and we would wish them every success….we found the villages very interesting to wander through.
Peter Copleston The trip was excellent. We loved all the accommodations even though they were all very different. Yakinthos Hotel was a very special experience because of our host Maria. She is very gracious and really puts her heart into pleasing her guests. We actually liked Axos more than Anogia. Great trip! Kay Seligson We LOVED our visit to Crete. Everything was fantastic. Axos was absolutely amazing. Maria was absolutely wonderful! I wonder if we will ever again stay somewhere with better hospitality. I can not say enough good things about this trip! I also wanted to let you know that I will be happy to provide a recommendation if anyone is looking for information from a traveler on Yakinthos. And hopefully, we will someday make it back to Crete or perhaps be able to move to there :-) Ginger Root We had a fantastic time thank you. The hotel was lovely and certainly remote. The only downside to that was we had to do a lot of driving (everything always looks closer on a map) but the views and the people made up for that. And speaking Greek meant that we got to meet everyone in the village, were given lots of coffee and glika and personal guided tour of one of the many churches in Axos ... we even went to church with Maria (the hotel owner) and her husband (a part time priest!) and had a personal mandolin performance from Yianni down in the village - what a character he is. We did have a small problem paying by VISA as Maria wasn't sure how to accept card payment but between us we managed to sort this out. So I would advise future guests to pay in cash if they can. Other than that I can't think of any faults, we were looked after beautifully and Maria's cooking is just like my yiayia's! Despina Pangelos All your arrangements worked beautifully and we had a wonderful time. Yakinthos was great - even better that Keramos. Beautifully designed and fitted out, great views and wonderful hospitality. Maria was such a lovely person - insisted on giving us Greek salad and Raki when we arrived at about 2pm and diner every night - she's a very good cook ! One problem we found over the whole island - no one takes credit cards (not even some of the smaller banks), changing travellers cheques was a nightmare, and most petrol stations said cash only. Even Maria at Yakinthos would only take a credit card for the room, not the food. So cash flow was a problem - partly our own fault for not bringing enough Euro's but also because we stayed away from the big cities. Altogether - a fantastic holiday - wonderful hospitality, wonderful country and so much to see - we only saw the eastern half ! We're coming again to do the western end - hopefully next spring. Many thanks, for all your help in planning this and I'll be in touch ! ! ! Angela Dudley About these guest experiences RATES 2010 (rates include our Superb, All-questions-answered Personal service)
